How To Prepare A Room For Painting For Less Mess To Clean

Prepare Your Room So Paint Doesn’t Get Where It Shouldn’t In Your Westchester, Dutchess, Or Putnam County Home

You can prepare a room for painting in 7 steps. It involves moving anything you can out of the room. Anything you can’t you can put in the middle and cover. Take everything off the walls including outlet and light switch covers. If painting the ceiling, remove fans and lights. Then vacuum and put down drop cloths.

Remember What Happened Last Time…

“After what happened last time we aren’t skipping any steps,” Charlotte says firmly.

Pete simply nods his head in agreement and a little embarrassment. He might be able to fly fighter jets with the best of them but home improvement projects were never his thing.

Last time he tried painting a room he spent more time cleaning up after than he did painting. There was paint in the carpet, on the light switch covers, and all over his clothes. There was also a bunch of dust left after sanding that needed vacuuming.

It was a mess.Things would’ve been different had they decided to hire a professional but nooo Pete had to try it himself. That’s why this time Charlotte made him look up how to prepare a room for painting.

7 Steps To Preparing A Room For Painting

  1. Move smaller items out of the room
  2. Move larger items to the center or out of the room
  3. Take down anything on walls or over windows
  4. Remove outlet and light switch covers
  5. If painting a ceiling, remove any fans and light fixtures
  6. Vacuum
  7. Put down drop cloths

After these 7 steps, you’ll start preparing the walls for painting.

Basically, the room you are going to paint should be as empty as possible. If you can’t move out larger objects then pile them in the center and cover them with a tarp or drop cloth. Don’t forget to remove blinds or curtains (they don’t look great with paint on them).

Making It A Little Bit Easier

Pete and Charlotte follow these steps on how to prepare a room for painting so they’ll have an easier time cleaning afterward. They won’t be scrubbing paint out of the carpet, scraping it off anything, or having to do extra work.

They’ll be back to enjoying their newly painted room in no time at all.

We’d love to hear how these steps worked for you in the comments below!
